Audience: Effects Theory.

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience:

They take in information but dont really interact.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:

Opposite of passive and they interact and make choices.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:

Audiences are always passive and they take the intended meaning from the producer and inject it into their mind suggesting audiences dont differ from each other.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The Times newspaper
 > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY:
 > Why:  People can easily relate to the character as the show is aimed at people in from their teens to the late 20's
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT:
 > Why: You can escape from your troubles at home and involve yourself with whats happening in the show.
RELATIONSHIPS:
 > Why: You care about the characters and you keep watching so that you can get the whole story.

5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

In the clip from the blue planet video i can see that there is information as blue story is a documentary about the ocean life.
When analysing the clip i could identify pieces of visceral pleasure as you are watching what the sea life do to each other and how they live their life.information and surveillance allows the audience to learn about ocean life and see real life through the perspective of animals and also learn about sea life through David Attenborough's narration. Overall its a good show to watch to relax your mind.

Reception theory.

1. What is the preferred reading of a media text?

The preferred reading is the producers trying to communicate to the audience.

2. What is the oppositional reading of a media text?

The opinion of the consumer.

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?

The preferred reading of the content would be that young people are dangerous and dont have feelings.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?

Young people might reject this reading of young people as it could be perceived as stereotyping, This may also deter them from watching the actual movie.
